While winter brings us great holiday cheer and family time, it can also create a very dead, unflattering environment for portrait photography. The trees are bare, skies are grey, and let's be honest, we are all pale! This may deter many but to us it is an opportunity to be a little creative.
We found that a great solution is to take your portraits in an urban environment. Use man made structures as your backdrops. Look for brick, old doors, or graffiti. Bring the color back into the winter environment.
We are not huge fans of using props, but winter is a perfect time to incorporate them into your shoot. Get your subject to dress for the occasion. Bring blankets and fun winter clothes. If it is a couples shoot, have them cuddle really close. Maybe even add in some hot chocolate!
Once you are ready to edit and color correct your photos, pick a color palette that meshes with pale tones and grey skies. We are huge fans of black and whites and pastels.
